Training Program

The Training Program (TP) of the FBI in Louisiana is primarily responsible for providing training to sworn law enforcement officers throughout the state. Most of the training is provided to officers attending Basic Law Enforcement Academies that are authorized by the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement. All training received is recognized by the Peace Officers Standard of Training (POST) Council.

Beyond the basic academy instruction, the FBI provides in-service training for veteran law enforcement officers on a number of requested topics. In the past, those topics have been Interview and Interrogation, Death Investigation, Crisis/Hostage Negotiation, Media/Public Information Officer, and Fingerprint schools. Recently requested classes include Terrorism, Weapons of Mass Destruction, Cultural Diversity, and Civil Rights/Hate Crimes.

The New Orleans Division, in affiliation with the Louisiana Commission on Law Enforcement, hosts at least six Instructor Development Courses (IDC) yearly. Each instructor that instructs law enforcement topics in one of the state's approved academies must successfully complete the 40-hour IDC.

Additionally, on an annual basis, at least 16 law enforcement officers from Louisiana are invited to attend the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. This program is 10 weeks long and is open to law enforcement officers who have attained the rank of Lieutenant or above and are considered to be at least mid-level managers in their departments.

Officers attending the FBI National Academy are offered, on a cost-free basis, a comprehensive and balanced program of advanced professional instruction. Throughout this training, particular emphasis is placed on leadership development.

Through an affiliation with the University of Virginia, National Academy Students are able to earn substantial college credit for the academic portion of the curriculum, which includes a number of specialized courses.

The FBI National Academy has been in existence since 1935 and the FBI is proud to administer the National Academy Program. Since 1935, over 30,000 law enforcement officers have graduated from the program and over 20,000 are still active in law enforcement today. The training has long been considered a benchmark for professional, continuing education. The impressive number of graduates who have achieved top executive positions in their respective agencies is a continuing source of pride to the National Academy.
