Public Corruption Program

The FBI has a continuing responsibility to respond to allegations or development of information within the FBI's jurisdiction involving abuse of trust by public officials. A public official is an individual elected or appointed to a position of trust in a government entity or political subdivision thereof. Public corruption investigations are viewed as among the most sensitive investigative matters the FBI handles. These investigations demand a circumspect and prudent approach. Much is at stake for any public official who becomes a focus of a corruption investigation. There is usually intense media attention surrounding these investigations and the reputation of the official may be adversely or irrefutably affected. Most allegations involving public officials center around bribery or extortion under color of official right. They relate to a solicitation of something of value in exchange for an official action (or lack of action) on the part of the official. Included is municipal corruption involving the issuance of licenses, permits, contracts or zoning variances; judicial case fixing; corrupt legislative activity; and law enforcement corruption involving payoffs or protection.
