 New Orleans, like each of the FBI’s local field offices, has a community outreach program that complements and strengthens our many efforts to protect you, your businesses, and your families in concrete ways through a range of activities and initiatives.
Our recent activities include:
- From New Orleans to Baton Rouge and throughout the state, the 2009 National Night Out Against Crime events were a success for the division. Citizens turned out at community events to support the fight against crime and to support law enforcement efforts.
- Through our Citizen’s Academy, the New Orleans Division has increased public awareness about the FBI, its mission, and its activities and has created partnerships with community, civic, religious, and business leaders. Since the launch of the New Orleans Citizens’ Academy, more than 450 community leaders have successfully completed the training. The next Citizens’ Academy session will be held September 16 - October 24, 2009 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
- Promoting the National Child ID program and the FBI's long partnership with the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) is a continued goal of our division. Each year, we coordinate community outreach events to distribute thousands of child ID kits to concerned parents, teachers, and children. Some recent venues the office has participated in include: the 2009 All State Sugar-Bowl, Congressman Cao’s Health Care Initiative, and National Night Out Against Crime venues across Louisiana.
- Personnel from FBI Headquarters and the New Orleans Division provided 2009 Essence Festival spectators a little something extra this year by being on-hand to discuss Bureau programs and to pass out information on employment opportunities.
Among our other ongoing efforts:
- The New Orleans Multi-Cultural Advisory Council (MCAC) consists of New Orleans business, civic, religious and community leaders from various cultural disciplines. The New Orleans Division Executive Management attends all MCAC meetings to promote partnerships and dialogue with community leaders. An essential element of the MCAC is to afford minority groups and civic organizations the opportunity to talk about what the FBI can do with them and for them and hosting town hall meetings as needed to dialogue on key issues.
- Special Agent in Charge David Welker has met with community leaders and watch-groups to encourage citizens to step forward to report crime and to serve as witnesses in court.

 Our investigators liaison with schools, businesses, and civic organizations to explain emerging crime and security threats and to provide specific advice on how to prevent being victimized by these threats.
- In coordination with the New Orleans Division, our FBI Citizens’ Academy Alumni Association (FBICAAA) supports the FBI and participates in local crime prevention programs and other initiatives that benefit communities. The New Orleans FBICAAA has helped the division distribute child ID kits at community events to promote child safety.
- Our Community Outreach Program continues to participate on local committees and boards for businesses, schools, community groups, and social and health services that launch drives to bring food, gifts, and toys to the less fortunate during the holidays and other times of the year.
- Special agents and professional support staff work to mentor and tutor at-risk youths through programs such as Adopt-A-School, Principal for a Day, and other youth based initiatives. Our office recently participated in the Law Enforcement Day at the Dryades New Orleans YMCA. Students interacted with FBI staff to learn more about the FBI’s SWAT program, Evidence Response Team, and Community Outreach Program.
