NEW ORLEANS MAN SENTENCED TO OVER 6 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR DRUG AND GUN VIOLATIONS

ANTHONY C. KING, age 22, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, was sentenced yesterday by U. S. District Judge Mary Ann Vial Lemmon to over six (6) years imprisonment for violating federal drug and gun laws, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.

Specifically, KING was sentenced to eighteen (18) months imprisonment for distribution of crack, and possession with intent to distribute crack; and sixty (60) months imprisonment to run consecutively to the eighteen months sentence for possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Lemmon imposed five (5) years supervised released following the term of imprisonment when the defendant will be under federal supervision and risks an additional term of imprisonment should he violate any terms of his supervised release.

According to the court documents, on June 26, 2006, a confidential informant told a New Orleans Police Officer that he had personally purchased crack cocaine from KING at a location on Verret Street. NOPD subsequently set up surveillance on the area and observed KING participating in apparent drug transactions. NOPD subsequently set up a controlled purchase of crack cocaine utilizing the confidential information. Based on the investigation, NOPD officers subsequently executed a search warrant and located numerous weapons and approximately 1.2 grams of crack cocaine.

The investigation was conducted by the New Orleans Police Department with the assistance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The prosecution was handled by Assistant U. S. Attorney Richard Rose.
