Computer Crime Program

New Orleans Division recently formed a computer crime squad. The New Orleans Division computer crime squad is comprised of technically trained computer crime investigators. This squad is headquartered in New Orleans yet its investigative territory encompasses the entire state of Louisiana.

This squad is part of the FBI’s National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC) which has a hybrid mission of both criminal investigation and national security. The New Orleans Division NIPC squad’s mission is to prevent, deter, respond to, and investigate, attacks on Louisiana’s critical infrastructures and to investigate crimes involving computers and threats targeting the National Information Infrastructure (NII).

The NII is defined as the network of advanced computer systems, databases, and telecommunications systems throughout the United States that make electronic information widely available and accessible. Presidential executive order 13010 signed in 1996 designates the FBI as the lead agency for coordinating and conducting the U.S. governments protection, prevention, response and restoration responsibilities involving criminal, terrorist and foreign power threats to the NII.

The NIPC also investigates threats and electronic attacks upon other parts of the national infrastructure such as electrical power systems, gas and oil storage and transportation systems, banking and finance systems, transportation systems, water systems and government systems. The New Orleans Division computer crime squad has an additional duty of investigating crimes involving the electronic transmission of child pornography.
